Navigating Challenging Conversations

Before a challenging conversation begins, taking time to clear your mind and choose how you want to show up can significantly shape what follows. This video introduces a structured way to prepare for, or reflect on, difficult interactions using different perceptual positions. First consider the conversation from your own perspective, including your objective, feelings and response to the other person. Then step into their position and imagine what matters to them, how they might feel and how they may experience your behaviour. A third, neutral position allows you to observe the interaction from the outside, noticing the language, behaviours and cause-and-effect between both people. Finally, adopt the position of a coach and use what you have learned to guide yourself towards a more constructive approach. You cannot control another person’s emotions, but you can choose your own energy, delivery style and response.

Who’s It For?

Helpful for anyone anticipating a difficult interaction or reflecting on a conversation that did not go as planned. It will help you build empathy, increase self-awareness and prepare to communicate with greater calm, balance and resilience.
