Understanding Microaggressions
Microaggressions are small actions or words that have a significant impact on people. The term may be small, but its impact is huge. These seemingly small comments add up and can make someone feel like they are primarily viewed through a stereotype.Think of microaggressions as mosquito bites. One mosquito bite is not a problem, but 50, 100, or 1,000 can be unbearable, and the harm is real. The same is true for microaggressions. A single statement taken in isolation may not ruin someone's day, but it adds up and sends a message that the person is other and different.
